About 8 years ago I was driving on US19 in Pasco County Florida, and sitting at a traffic light next to us was a vehicle with a magnetic that said EagleWatch Volunteer and a phone number. I knew I had to get involved with this as I already had a local nest I was watching and photographing. I called the number, then attended the training class to learn all about the EagleWatch program. Excitedly, I settled in and waited for the start of eagle nesting season. I now monitor about 12 bald eagle nests.
About 3 years ago I was asked if there was an injured eagle would I rescue it? well, "YES you bet I would!" was my response. My first rescue was a Red Shouldered Hawk, and I knew I was hooked. This was by far the coolest, most rewarding thing I could be a part of. I think it was over a year and a half before I was called to my first eagle rescue and it was a juvenile from a nest I monitor. My first bald eagle rescue was now in the books 100% everything I expected it to be.
Today, I have many rescues, some by myself and others with team members The reason for some of these rescues is both heartbreaking and just plain excuse my verbiage "Pisses me off" as it is so unnecessary.
Rodenticide is causing so many deaths to our birds of prey and to so many other animals up the food chain that I must do ALL I can to get the word out that we need to
*** STOP USING RAT POISON ***
Stop Rat Poison use in the United States. YES an all out ban of it's sales completely. Stop the unnecessary deaths of our birds of prey and other animals not intended to be eliminated by the control of a rodent.
My apologies for this disturbing image but it is what it is. DISTURBING
Education and awareness to the systemic issues that are killing wildlife since DDT in 1972. Rodenticide is so readily available and sadly most don't even know the horrible consequences of using it. It is my hope that this page and our local efforts can educate the masses to stop using rodenticides to kill off rodents.
If you are experiencing a rat or mouse issue, the best and most cost-effective method is a "Snap Trap". Dollar for dollar, your money's worth. I get it we live in Florida and many of you may be senior citizens and not physically able to set traps and deal with the deceased rodent after. Reach out to a neighbor or family member.
Always use snap traps in a safe manor keeping them away from your domestic pets.
** Don't use Rat Poison EVER **
Rodenticides or “rat poisons” are mixed compounds used to eradicate rodents. They are one of the most toxic agents commonly found in households. Historically, heavy metals such as arsenic were the first agents used to control rodent populations, but the most common rodenticide used in the twenty-first century is anticoagulants.
Rodenticide used to kill a rodent can have a chain reaction throughout the food chain. Everything that feeds on the next is at risk of sickness and/or death. If these animals that eat infected rodents are lucky enough they will get recued and receive medical attention to hopefully save their life.
There are numerous things we can each do to deter rodents from occupying our homes. Doing these will reduce the risk of visitor and and help prevent action from even being needed.
One might also consider putting up owl boxes on your property to encourage the best natural rodent deterrent on the planet. Feed an owl program is what I like to call it. They are also a blast to listen to and watch.
There are many non toxic products options available. These are a few we have researched that you may find beneficial to your particular needs.
We are a conservation organization working with great rescue and rehabilitation organizations. Together we can
Protect and preserve wildlife.
